Clapton Maisonette Fire Triggers Major Emergency Response as Investigation Begins

A major fire at a block of maisonettes in east London has prompted a large scale emergency response and sparked an ongoing investigation into its cause, after flames tore through part of a residential building in Clapton. Fire crews were called to Mount Pleasant Lane on Tuesday evening following reports of a blaze at around 20:00, with the incident quickly escalating into a significant operation involving dozens of firefighters working to bring the situation under control.

The response from London Fire Brigade saw 10 fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters deployed to the four storey building, highlighting the seriousness of the incident as crews battled the fire for nearly three hours before it was fully contained at 22:54. Emergency teams worked methodically to prevent the spread of flames across multiple flats, while also ensuring that residents were safely evacuated from the building amid growing concern about structural damage and smoke exposure.

Authorities confirmed that one person was assessed at the scene by emergency services but did not require hospital treatment, and no further injuries have been reported so far. Firefighters carried out a full search of the premises and successfully assisted at least one resident to safety, underscoring the critical role of rapid intervention in preventing what could have been a far more serious outcome in a densely populated residential area.

The impact of the fire has been substantial, with a ground and first floor maisonette completely destroyed and five additional flats suffering partial damage. Around 20 residents have been displaced as a result, with local authorities opening a nearby rest centre to provide immediate support, shelter and assistance to those affected by the incident.
