London Tube Strikes Set to Disrupt Travel as Union Opposes Work Changes

A series of strikes on the London Underground is set to disrupt travel later this month, with drivers planning multiple 24 hour walkouts. The action, led by the RMT Union, is expected to affect several lines, with some services potentially coming to a complete halt during strike days.
The dispute centers on opposition to proposed working arrangements, including a four day week with longer shifts. Union representatives argue that the changes could lead to fatigue and raise safety concerns, particularly for drivers operating under more compressed schedules. They have also raised issues about working conditions and shift patterns.
The first strike is scheduled to begin on April 21, with additional dates planned, creating ongoing disruption for commuters across London. During the initial phase, at least two Tube lines are expected to close entirely, with wider impacts likely across the network as services are reduced.
Transport for London has criticized the planned action, describing it as unnecessary. Officials say the four day working week is currently being trialed on a voluntary basis and is intended to improve work life balance without compromising safety.
Passengers are being advised to plan ahead, consider alternative routes, and allow extra travel time during the strike period. As negotiations continue, the situation highlights ongoing tensions between unions and transport authorities over working conditions and operational changes in one of the world’s busiest metro systems.
