Wayne Rooney Hails Declan Rice as Future England Captain

Former England striker Wayne Rooney has praised Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice as a likely future captain of the national team, following the 26-year-old’s influential performance in Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Everton.
Rooney, who captained England from 2014 to 2017, was at Goodison Park to witness Rice’s display firsthand, describing him as “absolutely incredible.” He highlighted Rice’s intelligence on the pitch, from precise passing and decision-making to his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
Rice has already earned 72 caps for England and has captained the side twice in the absence of Harry Kane, in a 2-2 draw with Belgium in March 2024 and a 3-0 victory over Wales in October 2025. Rooney believes Rice’s leadership qualities and drive make him a natural successor to Kane.
“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show. “He was all over the pitch. His decision-making, his positioning, his drive—everything he did was a pleasure to watch.”
The former striker also noted that Rice’s contributions often go underrated, pointing out his versatility in splitting centre-backs, acting as a third defender, and making forward runs into the box.
Arsenal fans and England supporters alike are watching Rice’s development closely, as his performances continue to mark him as one of the most promising leaders in English football.
