Swinney Condemns Alleged ‘Secret Bugging’ of SNP MSP

First Minister John Swinney has described reports that a staff member secretly recorded an SNP MSP as “completely and utterly unacceptable,” following claims published in The Scotsman newspaper.
The newspaper reports that a former worker allegedly placed listening devices in the office of an unnamed politician in late 2023. The individual is no longer employed by an elected representative but currently holds a position as an office bearer in a local branch of the SNP.
Swinnney, speaking on the matter, said that such behaviour is “unacceptable in any context” and stressed the importance of trust and integrity within political offices. “All MSPs and their staff should be able to work in an environment free from clandestine monitoring or breaches of privacy,” he said.
The incident has raised questions about internal staff management and oversight within political parties. Both the Scottish Parliament and the SNP have reiterated that MSPs are responsible for managing their own staffing matters. This includes vetting, supervising, and, if necessary, disciplining staff members. However, critics argue that the allegations point to broader concerns about accountability and the safeguarding of personal and professional privacy in political offices.
While the alleged events occurred over a year ago, the story has gained renewed attention following media reports, highlighting ongoing concerns about transparency and ethical conduct in Scottish politics. Experts say that the potential for surveillance or unauthorised recordings in political settings can have serious implications, not only for individual politicians but also for public confidence in democratic institutions.
Legal experts note that any unauthorised recording could constitute a criminal offence under UK law, including breaches of data protection and privacy legislation. However, it is unclear whether police or other authorities are currently investigating the matter.
The SNP has stated that it takes the issue seriously and will support MSPs in ensuring that appropriate workplace safeguards are in place. Meanwhile, the Scottish Parliament said it is committed to maintaining a safe and professional environment for all elected representatives and their staff.
For now, the focus remains on understanding the full circumstances of the alleged bugging, including who was involved, the purpose of the recordings, and the potential legal consequences. The story serves as a reminder of the importance of trust, transparency, and proper oversight in political offices, and has reignited debate about staff conduct and internal party accountability.
As the situation develops, political observers and party members will be closely watching for any follow-up actions or investigations, which could have wider implications for internal governance and staff protocols within the SNP and other political parties.
