How a Rockette Spends Christmas in New York City

For over a century, The Rockettes have been an iconic symbol of Christmas in New York City, dazzling audiences with their precision choreography and festive performances at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Brooklyn Bronson, a fourth-season member of the troupe, offers a glimpse into what life is like for a Rockette during the holiday season, and shares her tips for enjoying the magic of the city.
For Bronson, Christmas begins long before December 25. “We start rehearsals in September, so Christmas starts pretty early for us,” she explains. The routine is demanding: six hours of rehearsal a day, six days a week, perfecting the intricate moves, synchronized kicks, and high-energy routines that have made the show legendary. Despite the intensity, Bronson says she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love it! Christmas is my favourite holiday, so it’s really special to be immersed in it for so long.”
Life as a Rockette during the holiday season involves more than just performing on stage. Bronson and her colleagues live and breathe the show, balancing rigorous practice with costume fittings, makeup preparation, and media appearances. The camaraderie among troupe members is a cornerstone of the experience. “We become like a family,” Bronson says. “It’s exhausting but rewarding, and we share the excitement of bringing joy to thousands of people every day.”
Beyond the stage, Bronson has her own ways of soaking up New York City’s holiday spirit. She recommends starting with the city’s classic Christmas sights: the Rockefeller Center tree, ice skating at Bryant Park, and window shopping along Fifth Avenue. “There’s something magical about New York at this time of year,” she says. “Even after months of rehearsals, seeing the city all decorated really makes it feel like Christmas.”
Bronson also encourages visitors to explore hidden gems around Manhattan. From festive street markets in Union Square to the holiday lights in Dyker Heights, she believes there’s a sense of wonder waiting around every corner. “Take a moment to just enjoy it,” she advises. “The city comes alive in December, and you can feel the energy and excitement everywhere.”
For aspiring performers, Bronson shares advice for balancing the demands of a high-profile show with the joy of the season. “Stay focused, stay positive, and enjoy every moment,” she says. “Performing in the Christmas Spectacular is a dream, but remember to take in the holiday cheer around you too.”
As the Radio City Christmas Spectacular continues to enchant audiences, Bronson and her fellow Rockettes embody the spirit of the season, hard work, precision, and above all, a celebration of joy. Their dedication ensures that New York City remains synonymous with the magic of Christmas, year after year.
