England Overhaul Back Line Ahead of Six Nations Clash With Italy

England head coach Steve Borthwick has made sweeping changes to his starting line up for Saturday’s Six Nations Championship match against Italy in Rome, introducing a new look back line as his side looks to revive its campaign.
Nine changes have been made to the starting XV following consecutive defeats to Scotland and Ireland. England currently sit fourth in the Six Nations table after losses that halted a 12 match winning streak and dented hopes of a title challenge.
The most notable adjustments come in the backs. Fin Smith has been selected at fly half, while Seb Atkinson starts at centre. Tommy Freeman is the only back retained from the defeat to Ireland, though he shifts from the wing to outside centre. Elliot Daly comes in at fullback, with Cadan Murley and Tom Roebuck named on the wings to complete a reshaped back three.
Injuries have played a part in the changes. Scrum half Alex Mitchell is sidelined with a hamstring problem, while centre Ollie Lawrence is unavailable due to a knee injury. However, other alterations appear to reflect Borthwick’s desire for a response after what he described as underwhelming recent performances.
George Ford, Freddie Steward and Fraser Dingwall are among those omitted from the starting side. Ben Spencer takes over at scrum half as England look for greater control and tempo in Rome.
Italy have never beaten England in 32 previous meetings, but their recent form has improved and playing at the Stadio Olimpico offers a significant opportunity. With England fielding an experimental line up and confidence dented by heavy defeats, the hosts may sense a rare chance to challenge.
Borthwick said the team selection was designed to meet the demands of a difficult away fixture. He acknowledged the challenge Italy will present and emphasised the need for a higher standard of execution and physicality.
In the forward pack, number eight Ben Earl is set to earn his 50th England cap. He will form the back row alongside Tom Curry and Guy Pepper. Earl’s milestone has been praised by the coaching staff, who view him as a key leader within the squad.
Captain Maro Itoje partners Alex Coles in the second row, while Ellis Genge and Joe Heyes start as props with Jamie George at hooker. Pepper, Coles and George are among the forwards introduced following the Ireland defeat.
The overhaul reflects England’s urgency to regain momentum in a tournament that began with high expectations. With the Six Nations entering a decisive phase, performance levels in Rome will be closely scrutinised as Borthwick seeks consistency and resilience from a refreshed squad.
