Canal Collapse Sparks Fears of Severe Blow to Local Boat Hire Businesses

A major canal collapse in Shropshire is set to have a serious impact on tourism and canal based businesses, according to the owner of a nearby narrowboat hire firm. The incident has left boats stranded, disrupted travel routes, and raised concerns about long term economic damage in the area.

The collapse occurred in the early hours of Monday on the Llangollen Canal near Whitchurch, where a large section of the embankment gave way, creating a deep hole in the waterway. Two boats were pulled into the collapse, while a third was left dangerously balanced above the damaged section. Since then, dozens of people who live on their boats have been unable to move, with repair work expected to take several months.

Paul Donnelly, who runs Floating Holidays in Middlewich, Cheshire, said the disruption could not have come at a worse time. He warned that the closure would have a massively negative effect on bookings, as the canal is a key route for holidaymakers. Many customers, he explained, choose the journey specifically to experience the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, one of the most popular attractions on the inland waterways network.

Without access to the route, businesses that rely on seasonal tourism fear cancellations and lost income. Boat hire firms, local pubs, shops, and maintenance services all depend on steady canal traffic, particularly during warmer months when demand is highest.

Beyond the financial impact, there are also concerns for liveaboard residents who rely on the canal as their home. Being unable to move freely affects access to services, work, and supplies, adding further strain to an already difficult situation.

As assessments and repairs begin, business owners are calling for swift action and clear communication from authorities. They say restoring the canal is vital not just for tourism, but for protecting livelihoods and preserving a waterway that plays an important role in the region’s identity.
