A 21 year old prisoner is being sought by police after escaping from a London hospital for the second time in less than a week, prompting a review of security procedures.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Daniel Boakye fled from Lewisham Hospital in south east London on Sunday while in custody and receiving medical treatment. Officers attempted to pursue him but were unable to detain him before he left the building.

This marks the second time Boakye has absconded in recent days. On 10 February, he escaped while under the supervision of prison staff at a hospital in west London. He was located the following day at an address in Thamesmead and subsequently arrested.

Boakye was taken back into custody and charged on 12 February with escaping lawful custody. It is understood that he was later transferred to Lewisham Hospital for further medical treatment, where he remained until Sunday’s incident.

Police said that at the time of his latest escape, Boakye was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark Nike jacket. He is described as black, of medium height and slim build. Officers have urged members of the public not to approach him but to contact the police immediately if they have information about his whereabouts.

Boakye was originally jailed in July 2023 for conspiracy to commit robbery linked to offences committed between July 2021 and April 2022. He has been serving his sentence at HMP Feltham.

The Metropolitan Police said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the latest escape to understand how the incident unfolded. The force’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as part of the internal assessment.

Hospital escapes are rare but raise questions about coordination between healthcare providers and custodial authorities. When prisoners require medical treatment outside secure facilities, additional risk assessments and supervision arrangements are typically put in place. Investigators will now examine whether established procedures were followed and whether further safeguards are needed.

The case has attracted attention due to the short time span between the two incidents. Escapes from custody can carry further criminal charges and potentially extend existing sentences if the individual is recaptured.

Police have asked anyone who sees Boakye or has relevant information to contact emergency services, quoting the appropriate incident reference number. The search remains ongoing as officers continue efforts to locate and detain him.
