Prince Harry’s Security Arrangements in the United Kingdom Under Government Review

Published

Prince Harry’s security provisions in the United Kingdom are once again under formal review as discussions continue over what level of protection he should receive when visiting the country. The renewed assessment comes amid ongoing legal disputes, shifting public responsibilities and rising concerns about the safety of the Duke of Sussex, who no longer receives automatic taxpayer funded protection after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

According to government officials familiar with the process, the review is being conducted by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, the body responsible for determining which individuals qualify for state funded security. The committee evaluates risk assessments based on threats, public roles and the wider security environment. Prince Harry has repeatedly argued that his unique profile and the intense media scrutiny surrounding him place him at serious risk when he travels to the United Kingdom with his family.

The issue gained renewed attention after Harry launched legal action in 2021 challenging the Home Office decision to downgrade his police protection. He argued that he had offered to personally reimburse the government for the cost of security during visits and insisted that his family cannot safely travel to the United Kingdom without coordinated police support. The Home Office responded that protective security is not something individuals can purchase and that the level of protection must reflect official criteria rather than personal preference.

In recent months, legal documents revealed that Harry believes the threats he faces have not been sufficiently acknowledged. His legal team maintains that the risks existed long before he stepped back from royal responsibilities and have increased due to the intense public debate surrounding his private life, his memoir, high profile interviews and ongoing tensions within the royal family. They say that failing to grant adequate protection places both him and the public at risk during his appearances.

Government officials, however, stress that security decisions must balance public resources, consistency and fairness. They note that several former senior royals and public figures also do not receive full police protection once they leave official duties. The review is expected to examine whether Prince Harry’s circumstances warrant a different approach given his international profile and the frequency of incidents involving unwanted intrusions or online threats.

The royal family has not commented publicly on the review, but palace sources say the matter remains a government responsibility. Relations between Harry and other family members remain strained, although he has expressed on several occasions that security concerns are separate from personal disagreements.

Observers note that the outcome of the review could set an important precedent for how the United Kingdom handles security arrangements for royals who no longer work on behalf of the crown but remain globally prominent. For now, the Duke of Sussex continues to rely on private security firms when traveling abroad, although these teams do not have the authority to carry out certain protective duties in the United Kingdom.

A decision is expected later this year, but both sides acknowledge that any conclusion will likely influence how Prince Harry and his family plan future visits.
