‘Euphoria’ Creator Sam Levinson Teases Dramatic New Storylines for Season Three
Sam Levinson has revealed fresh details about what fans can expect from the long-awaited third season of HBO’s hit drama Euphoria, which returns in April next year after more than four years off air. Speaking at an event in London, Levinson explained that the new season will pick up five years after the last, allowing the characters to confront adulthood for the first time.
The series, known for its raw portrayal of issues such as addiction, sexuality, betrayal, and crime, features a cast led by Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer. Season three will also introduce new faces, including Grammy-winning singer Rosalía and online personality Trisha Paytas, who will be woven into the updated timeline.
Levinson revealed that Rue, played by Zendaya, will face an intense storyline. Rue is now “south of the border in Mexico,” he said, trapped in debt to Laurie, the unsettling drug dealer portrayed by Martha Kelly. Rue will be forced to think creatively and desperately as she attempts to repay what she owes, setting up one of the season’s central narrative threads.
Other major characters are also undergoing big life changes. According to Levinson, Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, is now living in the suburbs with Nate. The two are engaged, and Cassie is deeply consumed by social media, obsessing over the glamorous lives she believes her former classmates now lead. Levinson hinted that their wedding will be “unforgettable,” suggesting significant drama surrounding the couple.
Jacob Elordi’s character Nate continues to be a pivotal figure, now navigating an adult relationship marked by complicated power dynamics. Levinson did not reveal Nate’s exact storyline but emphasised that his presence remains central to the emotional tension of the show.
Hunter Schafer’s character Jules will take a different path, now studying art and trying to establish herself as a painter. Meanwhile Alexa Demie’s Maddy has moved into the entertainment world, working at a Hollywood talent agency, offering audiences a look at a new environment and new pressures she must navigate.
Lexi, played by Maude Apatow, will also be stepping into a new phase of her life. Levinson shared that she is working as an assistant to a showrunner portrayed by Sharon Stone, a casting decision that has already generated excitement among fans.
Levinson, who also created The Idol, which was cancelled after one season, expressed strong confidence in the upcoming Euphoria instalment. He said he feels this will be their “best season yet,” promising darker, more complex and emotionally rich storylines as the characters move further into adulthood.
